Group therapy and individual therapy are the two main types of therapies a private drug rehab center provides. Both forms of therapies have one goal and that is to help the addict rebuild their life. Each type of therapy has its own advantages and disadvantages and you must take care to attend every single session indicated on your timetable so that you can reap the full benefit of attending the drug rehab.
Group therapy plays an important role in the healing process of drug and alcohol addicts. It can heal your mind and set you free from all kinds of emotional struggles. Group therapy is ideal for patients who suffer from various types of problems as a result of their addictions such as eating disorders, body image, unhealthy relationship, mental problems, anger medication, and codependency.
It can make it less uncomfortable for the addicts to undergo treatment at the rehab. There will be several counselors working with the clients in the group session. The group therapy session is usually attended by 6 to 12 clients but there can be more people participating depending on the rehab center you join. There will be at least 3 or more group therapy sessions that the client need to attend in a week.
With group therapy, addicts at least have someone whom they can turn to when they need emotional support. You can open up yourself and share about your past addiction and how you feel about the rehab program with other members. You will feel that there is someone who hears your problem and not alone facing the addiction yourself.
The doctors will perform evaluation on the reactions of the clients during the discussion of their experiences with others. It enables you to discover hurts that may have contributed to your substance abuse lifestyle.
Individual therapy is a one-on-one session between the counselor and the addict. The best rehab will provide 1 – 2 sessions of individual therapy every week. They will assign a personal counselor to each addict after carrying out an evaluation based on the gathered information. The personal counselor will follow through with the progress of the client up until he completed the treatment and leave the facility. The client can develop a good rapport with the private counselor that is assigned to him. Normally, the client will only attend the individual therapy session once per week.
The advantage is that you can have the whole time to the counselor. Because you are the only participant the counselor can completely focus on you. If you have problems communicating your problem with others in a group therapy, you will have an easier time when working with a personal counselor that is assigned to you. Introvert drug addicts will find it easier to admit their problems and work with the counselor to overcome the challenges. All clients have different characters and unique needs. While some patients can easily open up about their feelings immediately, some will need to take a longer time to hurdle this obstacle.
Opening up about your problem to the private counselor will set you free from your struggles so that you are no longer bothered by the problem. You will be able to regain your confidence and self esteem when attending individual therapy sessions. The private counselor will try to trace the link of your past trauma or depression with the substance abuse. He will help you to develop a positive perspective on your life which is very important when you leave the facility and return back to the society. You will learn a number of life skills that enable you to free yourself from the emotional problems within you such as depression.
